UAB finishes Fall Workouts

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — The Gold team managed two wins Sunday afternoon to claim victory in the UAB baseball program’s Green and Gold Series.

After the teams split two games on Friday and two more on Saturday, Jonathan Merritt racked up three hits Sunday as his Gold team earned a 5-3 victory in the fifth game of the series and an extra-inning win in the sixth game.

The weekend intrasquad series followed a best-of-seven format with all games played to four innings. The Blazers now have one week of fall practice remaining as they continue to prepare for the 2009 season.

Game 5 Recap

The Gold squad scored all the runs it would need in the bottom of the first inning of Sunday’s first game. The first six runners in the frame reached base before RBI singles from Merritt and Keith DePew plated the first two runs of the game. Austin Taylor then followed with another single that scored two runs to give the Gold team a 4-0 advantage.

Gold starter Tristan Farrell maintained that lead with three strong innings on the mound. Farrell allowed just one hit while holding the Green team scoreless during his time in the game.

The Green squad broke through in the fourth inning with three runs but could not completely catch up. Trey Early notched a run-scoring single in the inning, and Mikael Saway brought two more runs home with another single.

With the bottom half of the final inning played in each game regardless of the score, the Gold squad tacked on the final run in the bottom of the fourth when Kevin Cope brought Digger Towe home on a sacrifice fly.

Game 6 Recap
Four innings were not enough to decide the second game of the day. The pitching duos of Jeff Younger and Payton Gardner for the Gold team and Jacob Nix and Trey Vice for the Green team battled to a 2-2 tie through four frames.

The Gold team scored its runs in the first inning on an RBI double from Taylor and a double-play ground ball that later scored Taylor from third base. The Green squad picked up a second-inning run on an RBI single from Jamal Austin and a fourth-inning run on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Andrew Manning.

In the first extra frame, each batter came to the plate with a 3-2 count, and neither team was able to score. In the second extra inning, in addition to the full count for each batter, both teams started with the bases loaded.

The Gold team was able to capitalize with 10 runs in the top of the sixth, while the Green squad could manage just three in the bottom of the frame.
