CHARLESTON, S.C. – First-year Head Coach Stuart Lake has completed his staff for the 2009 baseball season by adding student assistant, Anthony Hayes, it was announced Wednesday. Hayes, who will coach the outfielders, help with the hitters and act as the first base coach, will be the third coach on the staff to return to his alma mater, joining former CSU battery mates Lake and pitching coach Stan Kowalski.

“I am excited to have Coach Hayes join our staff,” said Lake. “Not only is he a former player here, but is a very knowledgeable coach that will help teach our players. I know Anthony will be a big plus for our program.”

Hayes will help the Buccaneers while finishing up his master’s degree, having played two seasons (1996-97) in the Blue and Gold. Hayes started and played in 97 games at CSU, missing the last few games of his junior season with an injury.

A transfer from Columbus State Community College, Hayes was a 2004 NJCAA Academic All-American and an all-conference selection. In 2005 he upped his performance, earning Player of the Year honors for his region, and first-team NJCAA All-American honors.

As a coach, Hayes has helped current CSU pitching coach, Stan Kowalski, at Pro Level Sports, serving as a hitting and infield instructor, as well as the third base coach for Pro Level’s 18u AAU team. He has also served as the varsity assistant coach at R.B. Stall High School during the 2008 season.
