The CBB continues our countdown to the 2009 College Baseball season with our Top 50 players to watch. We will be providing one player each day until we reach number 1.

We continue the list today with Tony Sanchez Jr. out of Boston College checking in at the 48th spot in our countdown. He is entering his junior season behind the plate for the Boston College Eagles after two successful seasons in a tough ACC. He is from Miami Killian High School in Miami Florida.

Sanchez led the Boston College hitting attack in 2008 with a .313 average with nine homers and 45 RBI in 2008 with 53 starts. He spent the summer with the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox of the Cape Cod League where he was able to continue to develop his catching ability while leading them in hitting with a .326 average with three homers and 18 RBI in 34 games. He was also named to the CCBL All-Star game as a starter for the East Division where he went 0-1. After the season was over, he was named to the All-Cape League team as one of the two catchers.

Sanchez had an immediate impact in the BC lineup during his freshmen campaign with a .318 average with one homer and 28 RBI in 50 games with 48 starts. His batting average was third best on the team during his first season with the programs.

We think that Tony will continue to develop on the field and behind the plate which should put him in the hunt for the best catcher in a very competitive ACC. His bat has consistently been there for the Eagles and has been a steady presence behind the plate. The biggest complaint in Sanchez’s game is his speed is below average and tends to hit into many double plays. One scout who has seen him on multiple occasions stated to me that he is the best draft eligible collegiate player in New England.
