The Wildcats, who will play 35 of their 55 games at home, host some of the nation’s top teams this season at Kindall Field.

TUCSON, Ariz. – Arizona Head Coach Andy Lopez has announced the 2009 Arizona baseball schedule, a slate that includes 35 home games and 20 road games.

After playing one of the most rigorous road schedules in the nation a year ago, this year’s schedule is much more manageable for a young Arizona squad that saw 11 of its players drafted in last June’s MLB draft. Only two of those players – RHP Preston Guilmet and 3B Brad Glenn – return in 2009, but a mix of veterans and talented newcomers will be fielded by Lopez, who has led the Wildcats to the postseason in five out of the last six seasons, including two Super Regional Appearances and a trip to the College World Series in 2004.

“I really like the makeup of this team heading into the season,” Lopez said. “On paper, it is not as deep of a team in terms of talent as the last couple teams we have had, but that’s not to say it won’t be by the end of the season and in the years to come. I think this group gets along very well and the cohesiveness is in place after a good Fall season, which is imperative as we prepare for this season.”

The Wildcats will host several of the nation’s top programs in 2009, including non-conference showdowns against Georgia (Feb 27 – March 1), Oklahoma State (March 10-11) and Michigan (March 13-15). Those programs, along with conference foes California (May1-3) and Arizona State (April 29, May 20), all advanced to the postseason in 2008.

The UA began its Spring semester on Wednesday and the baseball team will begin training for the 2009 season immediately. Under NCAA rules, official practices will not begin until February 2. In addition, a new NCAA rule limits schools to a 35-man roster for the season, which will be set before the first series.

The Wildcats host Sacramento State to begin 2009 with a three game series starting Feb. 20 at Jerry Kindall Field at Frank Sancet Stadium.
