MITCHELL KEYS RALLY AS BLUE TEAM TAKES GAME FOUR 5-4, EVENS SERIES 2-2
In a series that’s gone back and forth so much, it’s only fitting that the Blue team would rally for a come-from-behind win of its own after being on the opposite end in Wednesday’s game three. That’s exactly what happened Thursday night at Stanky Field.
Leading off the bottom of the seventh, freshman catcher Brent Mitchell got the rally started when he hit a towering solo homer that cut the Red team’s lead to 4-3. He topped that hit an inning later with a game-winning, RBI-double as the Blue team overcame a late 4-2 deficit to win game four 5-4 and even the Red and Blue World Series at two games apiece.
The Red team got off to a fast start against Blue team starting pitcher Lance Baxter. Clint Reynolds singled and stole second leading off the game, then came home to score on an RBI-double from Zach Grichor. Jake Overstreet brought Grichor home two batters later on a fielder’s choice, and the Red team jumped out to a 2-0 lead. FULL STORY
Black Ties Series With 8-5 Win
The Wichita State Black squad tied the Fall World Series at two games apiece with an 8-5 win in game four.
Kyle Sisney and Chris O’Brien each had two hits for the Black, while Remington Johnson went 1-for-1 with two RBI and a home run. Black squad starter Brian Flynn earned the win going five shutout innings with five strikeouts.
Andrew Letourneau went 4-for-5 for the Gold, while Will Baez and Cody Lassley each drove in two. Gold starter Charlie Lowell took the loss going five innings and giving up two runs on three hits while striking out two. FULL STORY
Team Black completes Black and Gold Series sweep.
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – After squandering an early three-run lead, Team Black rallied for two runs in the top of the ninth for a series-sweeping 11-10 win in the Black and Gold Series finale on Thursday. The late rally was Team Black’s third victory in the ninth inning in the best-of-five set.
Down 10-9 with nobody on and two outs in the ninth, Black’s John Cummins singled to start the comeback. Dominick D’Agata rewarded Cummins with a trip home on a run-scoring double to right in the next at bat to tie the game, and Adam Rusche followed with another double, this one to left, to plate D’Agata with the go-ahead run.
Right-hander Drew Wurdack (1-0), who had surrendered Team Black’s 9-7 lead with three runs in the bottom of the eighth, settled down to work a scoreless ninth inning to pick up the victory.
Gold southpaw Nick Decker (0-1) was charged with the loss after allowing the two runs in the ninth.
Team Black jumped out to an early lead, scoring six runs on five hits in the first and two more runs in the second. FULL STORY
Blue Team Evens Villanova Fall Classic with 10-6 Win in Game 2
Junior Brian Streilein pitched five scoreless innings with five strikeouts and the Blue team evened the Villanova Fall Classic with a 10-6 victory on Wednesday afternoon in the second game of the series.
Streilein left with a 9-0 lead behind two hits apiece from senior Joe Rosati and Wesley Borden. Junior Justin Bencsko and freshmen Cuyler Esposito and Nick Hellmuth also had two hits in the win.
The Gray team rallied in the bottom of the sixth inning with five runs off of Will Hebard but eventually left the bases loaded to end the inning. Sophomore Dain Hall was at the plate with the bags full and just missed a potential bases-clearing double before popping out on the next pitch. FULL STORY
Blue Squad Puts On Hitting Clinic; Ties Series
AKRON, Ohio – The Blue squad continued their winning ways and broke out the bats in a big way en route to 8-1 victory over the Gold squad at Lee Jackson Field this afternoon. Scott Foster earned the win for the Blue squad surrendering just one run while striking out five batters and James Podgorney was credited with the save.
The Gold squad, who suffered at the plate managing just 7 hits in 27 plate appearances, scored their lone run in the second inning. Brian Kordal led off the inning with a single to center field before advancing on a bunt single to third by Phil Bednar. Jason Corzine then grounded into a double play bringing Keene Marstrell to the plate. Marstrell would drive a single out to center field to plate Kordal. Foster ended the inning by getting Ivory Alexander to pop out to third basemen Ryan Frazee. FULL STORY
