The Dallas Baptist University Baseball Team held their first annual Alumni Weekend on October 3 and 4. The weekend started with a golf tournament that was held on October 3, at the Golf Club of Dallas, then a Home Run Derby on the morning of October 4, which was followed by the Alumni vs. 2008 DBU Baseball Team game.

The golf tournament proved to be a success with over 12 teams of foursomes hitting the course on Friday afternoon. The teams were competing for the lowest score, while individuals each had a chance to win on the longest drive and two closest to the pin contests. Directly following the tournament the participants were served dinner at the Golf Club of Dallas, along with an award ceremony for all the winners from the golf tournament.

Saturday morning started with a homerun derby, with over 30 former players taking part in the derby. Each player had seven outs to try and hit as many homeruns as possible. The derby proved to be a long ball-hitting contest, with Nick Santos, who played at DBU in 2007 and 2008 taking home the title, with 14 homeruns over two rounds. Santos narrowly defeated Dane Phillips, who played for the Patriots in 2001.

Directly following the homerun derby the Alumni and 2008 Patriot Team competed in a nine-inning contest. The Alumni had over 50 players in attendance and each player was able to find time in the game. Although putting up a tough fight, the Alumni Team fell short in the end, losing to the 2008 Team.

The Alumni Weekend wrapped up with a complimentary barbecue lunch for all the players and their families. With over 50 alumni and their families showing up for the weekend, the barbecue served about 225 people.

Head Coach Dan Heenfer said, “It was great to have so many former players and family members come back for alumni weekend. DBU has such a long tradition of success, it is only fitting to get people back to reconnect and invest in the future of the baseball program.”
