Thomas Announces Incoming Class & Fall Schedule

FIU baseball head coach Turtle Thomas announced his 2008 incoming class on Wednesday, as well as a schedule of events for the fall.

“Our goal is to improve our program every year and that comes through the recruiting efforts of our staff,” said Thomas.

The class, ranked 15th in the nation by Perfect Game Crosschecker, features 24 newcomers including seven JUCO transfers. Among the highlights are two players selected in the 2008 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft, five players listed on ProspectWire.com’s top-60 ’08 graduates in the state of Florida, five All-Dade and All-Broward selections, and one JUCO All-American. Georgia State Baseball Prepares for Pro Scout Day

Georgia State baseball will host its annual Professional Scout Day on Wednesday, October 15th. Professional Scout Day gives Panther baseball players a chance to show off their abilities in a variety of formats to different pro scouting organizations.

The afternoon function will begin at 3:30 with all of the players having a chance to participate in a 60-yard dash. That will be followed with each student-athlete taking batting practice on the field, before the team takes the field for infield and outfield fielding practice. The day will conclude with an inter-squad game, with each pitcher getting to pitch for one inning. FULL STORY

Marshal Baseball To Host Golf Outing/Alumni Game

The Marshall University baseball program will hold its 14th annual golf tournament, Friday, Oct. 3 at Riviera Country Club, and its alumni baseball game, Saturday at 1:00 p.m. at the Kennedy Center on Route 2.

Friday’s event begins with 8:30 a.m. registration followed by a shotgun start at 10:00 a.m. in scramble format.

There are still golf foursome spots available at this time for $350. Individual player sign up fee is $100. Sponsor opportunities are also available. A tee box sponsor is $150 and a corporate sponsor is $1,000. All golfers and sponsors are welcome. FULL STORY

Bishop, Tignor named baseball team captains for upcoming season

-Kennesaw State head baseball coach Mike Sansing is pleased to announce that seniors Ric Bishop and Wes Tignor have been named team captains for the upcoming season.

“Ric and Wes are two outstanding student-athletes and they are leaders on and off the field,” said Coach Sansing. “I know that these two young men will do a tremendous job in this role for us this season.”

“Being named captain is definitely an honor that I will take to heart and appreciate,” said Bishop, a senior from Columbus, Ga. “I think the most humbling thing about it is being part of something that we all on the team believe and expect to be pretty special this season.” FULL STORY

UCLA Baseball Welcomes Seven Newcomers to Westwood

UCLA baseball head coach John Savage welcomed seven newcomers to campus Thursday as fall quarter classes began in Westwood. Savage’s fourth full recruiting class at UCLA features eight talented players, including one freshman pitcher slated to enroll at UCLA in January 2009.

“We believe this is a class of players that can make an immediate impact in our program,” said Savage, who enters his fifth season as UCLA’s head coach. “This group is very talented, one that should be as good as any incoming class in the country.”

Collegiate Baseball has rated this group as the sixth-best recruiting class in the nation. The national baseball newspaper rated UCLA’s class higher than any other program’s recruiting class in California. FULL STORY

Catamount Baseball Begins Preparations for 2009 with Fall Practice; Announce Alumni Golf Outing

The Western Carolina Catamount baseball team and second-year head coach Bobby Moranda will begin preparations for the 2009 season this weekend with the opening of fall practice. Also, the baseball staff has announced an Alumni Golf Outing scheduled for Hall of Fame Weekend (Oct. 31-Nov. 2) as former Catamount pitcher, Jason Beverlin, is being inducted this year.

The NCAA regulates a period of 45 days in which the team can have up to 30 practice dates during the off-season. Moranda and staff, which have been working through individual work-outs, and the players — who have spent time working with WCU Strength & Conditioning Coordinator, Brad Ohrt — will take to the field together Saturday for the first time since last season.
