Michigan Announces Challenging 2009 Schedule

University of Michigan baseball head coach Rich Maloney announced today (Sept. 17) the Wolverines’ schedule for the 2009 season.

The three-time defending Big Ten Champions face up to seven games against 2008 NCAA Tournament qualifiers and will host a record 26 home dates during the 2009 slate. Additional highlights of the schedule include the inaugural Big Ten/BIG EAST challenge, the Jacksonville University Tournament, a weekend series at the University of Arizona and a trip to Port St. Lucie, Fla., for a repeat matchup with the New York Mets.

“This is another challenging schedule for us; one we look forward to with great anticipation,” said Maloney. “We are excited to take part in the inaugural Big Ten/BIG EAST Challenge in addition to some other strong early-season tournaments that we feel will give us an early indication of where we are for the 2009 season.” FULL STORY

KU’s 2009 ledger includes 26 contests against teams which qualified for the NCAA Tournament last season as well as showcase games at Rosenblatt Stadium (April 14) and Kauffman Stadium (April 22).

“I know our players are really excited about our 2009 schedule,” Price said. “They are all looking forward to the non-conference match ups with Missouri at Kauffman Stadium, and Creighton at Rosenblatt Stadium, along with our spring trip to Arizona State and San Diego State. With non-conference games with national powers Arkansas and Wichita State, along with our Big 12 games, this schedule should be ranked among the nation’s most difficult.” FULL STORY

Lion Baseball Looks Forward to Challenging 2009 Slate

HAMMOND – With less than six weeks to go before Opening Day 2009, the Southeastern Louisiana University baseball team is looking forward to once again taking on one of the most competitive schedules in the nation. Seven squads that earned berths in 2008 NCAA Regionals, including in-state powers LSU and Tulane, have the Lions excited to get the 2009 slate underway.

“I really believe that we’re fortunate to play in one of the toughest college baseball regions in the country,” head coach Jay Artigues said. “We’re surrounded by quality teams and that allows us to schedule a really tough non-conference schedule that will help us out when the Southland Conference season gets underway.”

First pitch of Opening Day 2009 is scheduled for 1 p.m. on Feb. 20 as the Lions play host to Eastern Illinois in a season-opening three-game set. Southeastern swept the Panthers in a three-game series to start off the 2008 season, but Artigues knows the Lions will have their hands full this time around against the defending Ohio Valley Conference Champions. Eastern Illinois returns 24 letterwinners and 12 pitchers from last year’s regional-qualifying team.

“They won their conference and advanced to a regional last year, and they have a lot of guys coming back, so you know they’re experienced,” Artigues said of the Panthers. “It will be a good challenge for us right off the bat to face a tough and experienced club like that.”

After a midweek contest against in-state rival UL-Lafayette (Feb. 25), a three-game home series against the Sacred Heart Pioneers (Feb. 27-March 1), and a pair of midweek games against Mississippi Valley State (March 3) and at SWAC power Southern (March 4), Southeastern gets the 2009 conference season underway with a three game series at 2008 SLC regular-season champion, Texas-San Antonio (March 6-8).

The three-game set with the Roadrunners gives way to a midweek test against perennial national powerhouse LSU on March 10. The contest marks the first time LSU has come to Alumni Field since 2002. The Lions, who won in Baton Rouge by a final of 6-3 on March 11 of last year, will try to make it two-in-a-row against the Tigers. Southeastern will conclude its season series with the Tigers at the new Alex Box Stadium on April 21.

“LSU will be here early in the season, and that’s going to be another tough midweek test for us,” Artigues said. “We played really well there last year and were fortunate to come away with a win. Our guys played really well when we had big crowds last year, so hopefully we can get a big Lions’ crowd out there supporting us that night.”

After returning to conference play with a three-game home series against McNeese State (March 13-15) Southeastern opens up the 2009 Senator’s Cup series with a home-and-home matchup with Tulane. The Lions will visit the Green Wave on March 17 before hosting Tulane on March 18. The two squads finish the season-long three-game rivalry series with a midweek contest in New Orleans on April 14.

“The Senator’s Cup is always a big series for us,” Artigues said. “Last year, we won out in a slugfest at home but couldn’t manage a win at there place. Hopefully, our fans will show up like they did last year. They were really a factor in that win (12-11 in 12 innings on March 25).”

The Lions will then hit the road, with three of their next four weekend series taking place away from Alumni Field. From March 20 through April 14, Southeastern will play 17 games, with just three taking place in Hammond. Mixed in with SLC series action at Central Arkansas (March 20-22), Texas-Arlington (April 3-5) and Texas State (April 9-11) will be midweek contests at regional power South Alabama (March 25) and 2008 NCAA Regional Qualifier Alabama (March 31).

The Lions only respite from travel comes in the form of a three-game series against 2008 SLC Tournament Runners-Up Lamar (March 27-29) and a midweek contest against Alcorn State (April 7).

Southeastern then begins a four-game homestand, wrapping up its season series with ULL on Arpil 15 then hosting Texas A&M Corpus Christi for a three-game SLC series (April 17-19).

After midweek contests at LSU (April 21) and hosting Southern (April 22), the Lions head west to face defending SLC Tournament Champion and 2008 NCAA Regional Qualifier, Sam Houston State (April 24-26).

A home-and-home series against Jackson State (April 28-29) gives way to the May portion of the schedule as Southeastern plays an alternating site three-game series with conference rival Nicholls State. The Lions and Colonels start off in Hammond on May 1 before heading to Thibodaux on May 2. The three game set concludes at Alumni Field on May 3.

A final non-conference midweek tilt at Alcorn State (May 5), leads to the home stretch of the SLC season as the Lions host Stephen F. Austin May 8-10 and visit in-state rival Northwestern State (May 14-16).

Southeastern knows it has its work cut out for it if the Lions hope to build on the momentum of consecutive 30-plu win seasons and make a run at the SLC Tournament title in Corpus Christi, Texas (May 20-23), but Artigues and his squad remain undaunted.

“Last year we had 30-plus wins for the second straight year, we had eight wins against NCAA Regional teams and we finished just short of the conference title,” Artigues said. “We’re excited for this season and we’re hoping that we can continue to grow our program into something special.”

One thing Southeastern hopes to have in its corner is a decided homefield advantage after leading the Southland Conference in attendance in 2007 and 2008.

“It’s great for our kids to play in front of big crowds and they’ve really responded well to that kind of attention,” Artigues said. “We hope the fans will keep coming out and supporting us because a packed house and a charged atmosphere really seems to suit us. We can’t thank the Hammond community enough for the way they’ve showed up lately.”

The Lions will get the 2009 season underway on Friday, Feb. 20 with a 1 p.m. first pitch against Eastern Illinois. Fans can call the Southeastern Athletic Ticket office at (985) 549-LION (5466) or visit www.LionSports.net for more details.
