Indiana Hoosiers Announce 2009 Baseball Schedule

The Indiana baseball team has released its 2009 schedule, head coach Tracy Smith announced today. The Hoosiers will play at least seven games against 2008 NCAA Tournament opponents. Highlights from the early part of the schedule include the Big Ten/BIG EAST challenge, the Austin Peay Invitational, the Georgia Southern Tournament and IU’s spring trip to Winter Haven, Fla.

“This is another challenging schedule for us during what should be a pivotal 2009 season,” Smith said. “We are excited to take part in the inaugural Big Ten/BIG EAST Challenge in addition to some other strong early-season tournaments. We feel that our tough non-conference scheduling will prepare us for the Big Ten season.”

The inaugural Big Ten/BIG EAST Challenge, hosted by the St. Petersburg/Clearwater Sports Commission, will feature 27 games February 20-22, 2009, at various spring training venues in the St. Petersburg/Clearwater area. Eight teams from the BIG EAST will join all 10 Big Ten squads at the event, where Indiana will take on West Virginia, Georgetown and South Florida. FULL STORY

2009 Temple Baseball Schedule

Four NCAA Tournament qualifiers, including three conference champions, highlight the 2009 Temple baseball schedule, fourth-year head coach Rob Valli announced today. The Owls open their 82nd season of varsity competition with a trip to the Florida Gulf Coast Classic where they will take on NCAA Super Regional qualifier Wichita State as part of the three-game tournament. Other NCAA qualifiers from a year ago on the slate include Charlotte, Rider and St. John’s.

“Our pre-conference trips to Florida, North Carolina, and Virginia should help us prepare for a very tough A-10 schedule,” Valli said. “We are excited about the opportunity to measure ourselves in mid-week games against some of the best competition the Northeast has to offer. Our fans will enjoy coming out to see us take on Penn State, Rutgers, and the Big 5 rivals.”

Temple will play host Florida Gulf Coast in the season opener on February 20 before taking on the Shockers, who went 48-17 in winning the Missouri Valley Conference title, and MAC-power Central Michigan in Fort Myers, FL. Following a visit to High Point (February 29-March 2), the Owls will take on George Mason in the mid-week opener on March 3. FULL STORY

Texas Tech Baseball Announces 2009 Schedule

Texas Tech Head Baseball Coach Dan Spencer and the athletics department announced a 55-game schedule today for the upcoming 2009 baseball season. The schedule is one game under the 56-game limit set by the NCAA and Texas Tech will announce a single game addition once details have been completed.

Spencer, who was named head coach back on June 13, begins his first season in 2009 and will face a challenging schedule in his first year including a game against Oregon State where he spent 11 seasons before moving to the South Plains. The 2009 slate includes seven teams who advanced to the NCAA Tournament, 26 home games and an eight-game (11-day) road swing through California.

“I think this schedule is going to be very good for this team,” said head coach Dan Spencer. “We will have a mix of new and returning players and I think that the fact this schedule is road heavy will make us tougher at the end of the season. We have some tough games on the schedule and I really hope our fans will buy into what we are trying to accomplish here and turn out in huge numbers every time we play at Dan Law Field. Our fans really helped us win some big ballgames last year and their support it critical to our success both on the field and on the recruiting front.” FULL STORY
