Siena hires Jimmy Jackson as Assistant Coach

Jimmy Jackson has been hired as assistant baseball coach at Siena effective immediately, as announced today by head coach Tony Rossi. Jackson will work primarily with Siena’s catchers and outfielders.

“Jimmy will be a valuable member of our staff because of his experience in professional baseball,” head coach Tony Rossi said. “He will be able to provide our student-athletes with some perspective and direction as to what it takes to succeed in college and make it to the next level.” FULL STORY

Kansas Baseball Names Szefc Assistant Coach

LAWRENCE, Kan.-Kansas head baseball coach Ritch Price announced Monday that the Jayhawks have hired former Louisiana-Lafayette assistant coach, John Szefc, as an assistant coach. Szefc (pronounced CHEF) will serve as the team’s third base coach, hitting instructor and will also coordinate recruiting efforts for the team.

“Coach Szefc is regarded across the country as one of the top young coaches in our game,” Price said. “He has a proven track record in developing hitters to be successful at the Division I as well as the professional levels.” FULL STORY

Oklahoma State Cowboy Baseball Opens Fall Practice

The Oklahoma State Cowboy baseball team began fall practice today at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium.

The Cowboys’ current roster includes 41 players, including 17 returning lettermen from last season’s ballclub that finished the season 44-18 and ranked as high as 17th in the national polls.

OSU will be looking to replace four starters in 2009, including All-Big 12 performers at first base, shortstop and catcher. Among the notable returners for the Cowboys are sophomore Tom Belza, who led the Big 12 Conference in hitting last season with a .386 average, and junior Tyler Lyons, who was 12-2 with a 3.31 ERA and tossed four complete games. Wichita State Fall World Series Set to Begin Oct. 1

The annual Wichita State baseball Fall World Series will begin on Wed., Oct. 1, at Eck Stadium. The series will last until Wed., Oct. 15, while Alumni Weekend will be held Oct. 3-4.

The Shocker roster will be divided into two teams, the Black and the Gold. One will be coached by 17th-year assistant coach Jim Thomas and the other by third-year volunteer assistant Jerod Goodale. The rosters will be announced at a later date.

The Gold squad won the 2007 Fall World Series in six games. FULL STORY

TCU Baseball Set To Open Fall Workouts Tuesday

The 2009 edition of TCU Baseball will kick-off fall workouts on Tuesday at Lupton Stadium. The Frogs return 21 members from last season¹s 44-19 squad. In addition, TCU welcomes 11 newcomers, including 10 freshmen and one junior college transfer. Fall practice will run through Oct. 26.

A new twist to the fall schedule will be the Purple/White season series that will replace the Purple/White World Series. The team will be divided into two squads for the entire fall season and will compete in 15 games throughout the course of the season. Additionally, TCU will square off against UT-Arlington on Oct. 4 at 11 a.m. FULL STORY

ASU Baseball Begins Fall Practice Monday

Monday marks the beginning of fall practice for the Red Wolves baseball program under first year head coach Tommy Raffo.

Thirty-four players will report for fall exercises including 23 returning players and 11 newcomers. Seven of the 11 newcomers are pitchers. FULL STORY

ULM Baseball Begins Sun Belt Title Defense on Monday as Fall Practice Begins

Defending Sun Belt Champion ULM opened fall baseball practice on Monday afternoon working out for nearly three hours at Warhawk Field.

The Warhawks return 18 players from last year’s championship squad including All-American shortstop Ben Soiginer (.394, 21 2B, 16 HR), All-Sun Belt selection Ryan McMillan (.298, 16 2B, 7 HR) and closer Derek Ward (5-3, 3.38 ERA, 7 SV).

2008 Sun Belt Coach of the Year Jeff Schexnaider welcomes 17 newcomers to this year’s team, including 10 junior college transfers. The Warhawks bolstered their pitching staff with 11 new pitchers in addition to returning weekend starters Drew Graham and Keith Christensen. FULL STORY

Vanderbilt opens Fall Practice on Tuesday

NASHVILLE, Tenn. –Vanderbilt baseball will open its fall practice schedule Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. with a vastly different team from a year ago.

This year’s practice sessions will have a different look as eight offensive players with 1,348 starts between them are gone due to graduation or the draft.

The veteran core of the team is in the pitching staff with the entire weekend rotation back this year. Junior southpaw Mike Minor served as the ace of the USA Baseball National team over the summer and was named Summer Player of the Year by Baseball America. He will look to build upon last year’s numbers when he went 7-3 with a 4.28 ERA. The Chapel Hill, Tenn. native is 16-4 in his career with a 3.72 ERA. FULL STORY
