Head coach Chad Kreuter brings in 14 freshmen and one transfer

A total of 14 freshmen and one transfer have enrolled at USC and will be eligible to play in the 2009 baseball season, head coach Chad Kreuter announced today.

The freshmen are: infielder Ryan Bast (Upland/Upland HS), infielder Shane Boras (Newport Coast/Junipero Serra HS), first baseman Beau Brett (Spokane, Wash./Ferris HS), left-handed pitcher Danny Coulombe (Scottsdale, Ariz./Chaparral HS), left-handed pitcher/infielder Brad Douthit (Scottsdale, Ariz./Desert Mountain HS), catcher/outfielder Brandon Garcia (Las Vegas, Nev./Bishop Gorman HS), outfielder Colin Hoffman (San Diego/St. Augustine HS), infielder Ashton Kent (Tucson, Ariz./Catalina Foothill HS), pitcher Ben Mount (Coto de Caza/Tesoro HS), first baseman/third baseman/pitcher Ricky Oropesa (Rancho Cucamonga/Etiwanda HS), catcher Kevin Roundtree (Glendora/Crescenta Valley HS), outfielder/pitcher Alex Sherrod (Marietta, Ga./Walton HS), right-handed pitcher Chad Smith (Thousand Oaks/Thousand Oaks HS) and outfielder Greg Zebrack (North Hollywood/Campbell Hall HS).

UT Arlington baseball mixes four junior-college transfers and one high school graduate with 29 returners for the fall season.

The UT Arlington baseball team began its voluntary skill instruction workouts on Tuesday, as the Mavericks squad welcomed five newcomers to their program for the fall season.

With a total of 29 returners from last season, the Mavericks coaching staff focused on bringing in players that could make a difference for UT Arlington in 2009. The Mavericks have added four junior-college transfers and one high school product to their mix for the fall season.

Deacons Open Fall Practice

The Wake Forest baseball team took the field for the first time in the fall, opening fall practice on a beautiful Wednesday afternoon at Hooks Stadium.

“I thought the first day went well,” head coach Rick Rembielak said. “I thought everyone knew where to go initially. We just started from the beginning with proper positioning. I thought the swings were good. The timing might be off a little bit, but the further along we go, the timing will come back.”

Swinson Named Most Outstanding Pitcher of Ripken League for Second Straight Season

Maryland starting pitcher Scott Swinson was named the Cal Ripken, Sr. Collegiate Baseball League’s Most Outstanding Pitcher, the league announced Tuesday, the second straight year Swinson has won the award.

Swinson went 5-1 with a league-best 1.03 ERA among starters in seven starts for Youse’s Maryland Orioles, the league champion. Swinson struck out 39 batters to only 11 walks and allowed only two extra-base hits in 43 2/3 innings pitched. Swinson led the league in earned runs allowed (five) and hits allowed (20). Additionally, Swinson did not allow an earned run in his last four regular-season starts.

Swinson is now 9-2 all-time in two seasons in the Ripken League.

LASALA NAMED ASSISTANT BASEBALL COACH

New Rochelle, NY – Iona College baseball head coach Pat Carey named James LaSala ’06 as his assistant coach for the 2009 season. LaSala returns to his alma mater after playing two seasons in the New York Yankees minor league system.

“I think James will add a lot to our program,” said Carey. “As a former player he has a desire to see Iona succeed and is very loyal and committed to his alma mater.”

EDDIE SMITH NAMED VOLUNTEER ASSISTANT COACH

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Virginia head baseball coach Brian O’Connor has announced the hiring of Eddie Smith as volunteer assistant coach. Smith has served as the program’s administrative assistant for the past two seasons.

STRICKLIN GIVEN FOUR YEAR EXTENSION

KENT, Ohio – After three consecutive MAC Championship seasons by both the baseball and softball teams, Kent State Athletic Director Laing Kennedy recently announced four-year contract extensions for Scott Stricklin and Karen Linder.

Both coaches were originally under contract through the 2009 season, but the new four-year contracts which began on Monday (Sept. 1) extend their time in Kent through 2012.
