The Monitor out of McAllen, Texas is reporting that Manuel Mantrana will be announced as the new head coach of the University of Texas at Pan Am. Coach Mantrana has spent the last 12 years as the head coach at St. Thomas University in Miami.

EDINBURG-The University of Texas-Pan American Interim Athletic Director Ricky Vaughn, announced Manny Mantrana as the new head coach for Bronc baseball Thursday.

“I want to thank the search committee along with Ricky Vaughn, Dr. Edwards and Dr. Cardenas for giving me the opportunity for me and my family to join the UTPA family,” said Mantrana. “I’m looking forward to bringing back the tradition Bronc baseball had been known for. It’s going to take plenty of work. I’m ready for the challenge and ready to put in the hours needed to restore that tradition.”

Mantrana comes to the Rio Grande Valley after serving as head baseball coach at Saint Thomas University (STU). During his tenure with STU, Mantrana completed 12 seasons produced an impressive record of 434-193-1 (.691). Mantrana has being labeled as the most successful coach in the history of the STU baseball program and he is looking to continue his success with the Bronc baseball program. Overall, Mantrana’s teams have appeared in post season play nine times, three of which went on to participate in the College World Series. In addition to his role as head coach, Mantrana also served as the hitting coach and also handled the pitching staff eight of the 12 years he has been at STU. His success hasn’t gone unnoticed by his peers as he has been recognized as Southeast Coach of the Year on three occasions and also earned Florida Sun Conference Coach of the Year honors three separate times.

“We are pleased to announce that Manny Mantrana will be new head baseball coach,” said Vaughn. “After an extensive and national we were able to compile an impressive group of candidates and Manny stood out in all aspects. We look forward to the future and Manny will bring to our program.”

Developing and graduating players is an important part of the program under Mantrana and his staff. Twenty players coached by Mantrana have signed professional contracts and all the players that have been in the program for four years have obtained their degrees. He has coached over 40 all-conference and all-region players and he has also coached ten All-American players including 5 All-American Scholar Athletes.

Prior to joining the Staff at the University of Saint Thomas, Mantrana played baseball for the Sharks at Miami-Dade College, where he was a tenth round draft pick for the Atlanta Braves in 1981. Coach Mantrana earned a bachelor’s degree in Sports Administration from STU in 1990.

He earned his master’s in Guidance and Counseling from STU in 1997

Coach Mantrana is married to the former Marlane Schwartz and has a daughter Maxine.
