Fritz Hamburg Named Saint Joseph’s Head Baseball Coach

Fritz Hamburg has been named the head baseball coach at Saint Joseph’s University, it was announced today by director of athletics Don DiJulia. Hamburg was previously the associate head baseball coach at the United States Military Academy.

“We’re pleased and excited to have Fritz on board as he owns a rich and well-rounded background in baseball,” said DiJulia. “We look forward to him enhancing the student-athlete experience in and out of the classroom, and on and off the field.”

“I’d like to thank Don DiJulia and (associate athletic director) Jim Brown for giving me the opportunity to lead the program. My family and I are very excited to return to Philadelphia,” said Hamburg. “I am certainly looking forward to the chance to work with a group of young men that is eager to succeed. I’m excited about helping this program grow and building on the foundation that was developed by my predecessors.”

Hamburg comes to Hawk Hill after spending the last eight seasons as the associate head coach at Army. He also filled the role of pitching coach, working with the squad’s pitchers and catchers as well as coordinating recruiting efforts in the Midwest and West regions.

Named the 2007 American Baseball Coaches Association/Baseball America National Assistant Coach of the Year, Hamburg helped tutor four Patriot League Pitchers of the Year. He has also coached 11 players that have been selected in the Major League Baseball Amateur Draft, including two chosen in the top 10 rounds. Six of his charges have received All-American honors.

Prior to his stint at West Point, he served as an assistant coach at Cornell, New Mexico State, Cal-Poly Pomona, Georgia, and Ithaca. He has also served as a summer league head coach in both the Northeast Collegiate Baseball League and the Valley Baseball League.

Hamburg, a native of Doylestown, Pa., began his collegiate playing career at Virginia Tech before transferring to Ithaca College, where he was an All-American catcher for the Bombers’ 1988 National Championship squad. The 1989 graduate then spent a year in the Phillies organization before embarking on his coaching career.
