Gamecocks set to welcome new baseball stadium

“There will not be a more impressive college baseball stadium in the country.” Those are the words of Athletic Director Eric Hyman in reference to USC’s new ballpark that will be opening in time for this year’s season.

Carolina fans sorrowfully said goodbye to Sarge Frye Field last year, a stadium rife with countless memories of players, coaches and unforgettable games. Nestled right below the Roost, the Sarge was the home site of Carolina baseball for 29 great seasons.

Nostalgia for the old ballpark will quickly be forgotten once fans get a glimpse of the university’s new $35.6 million dollar stadium. Originally slated to be ready for last year’s season, construction delays caused the opening of the new field to be pushed back a year. FULL STORY

Groundbreaking News for Oregon Baseball

With energy rampantly running through spectators at the groundbreaking ceremony for the Ducks baseball stadium, University President Dave Frohnmayer announced the official title of the park.

Named in honor of athletic director Pat Kilkenny, P.K. Park will seat an estimated 5,000 fans and help bring back a sport that has been absent from the school since leaving in a cost cutting effort following the 1981 season.

“It’s about past players. It’s about Phil Knight. It’s about strikeouts. It’s about Cracker Jacks,” stated Kilkenny in his address to spectators. “Today we break ground on a baseball stadium.” FULL STORY

Tar Heels enter fall ball boasting mix of young talent, proven veterans

Recruiting is the lifeblood of every program. You need talent to compete for the national championship — and talent is something that UNC has had an abundance of in the past four years. During that period, the Tar Heels have won 205 games, tied with Rice for the most in college baseball, and very few teams have recruited better than North Carolina. FULL STORY

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – University of Louisville junior 3B Chris Dominguez and signees Keith Landers and Tony Zych have all decided to retain their NCAA eligibility by not signing pro contracts before Major League Baseball’s August 15 deadline.

“This is truly a win for the Cardinal baseball program, because of what Chris can do for the program now and the impact that Keith and Tony will have during the next three years,” said Head Coach Dan McDonnell.

Dominguez, the 2008 BIG EAST Co-Player of the Year and BIG EAST Tournament MVP, was drafted by the Colorado Rockies in the 5th round of the 2008 MLB Draft.

“Chris has the complete resume,” McDonnell noted. FULL STORY

Cody Penny picks North Carolina

Cody Penny often wore a Tar Heel sleeper suit when he was six months old. He’s got the pictures to prove it.

A year from now, the South Caldwell High senior will again put on some North Carolina blue. This time, however, it’ll be a baseball uniform.

Penny has verbally committed to pitch for Mike Fox’s national power in Chapel Hill. He will make his decision official by signing in November.  FULL STORY
