While the regular season ended in May, several Golden Panthers are still taking swings and toeing the rubber as they take part in summer ball.

Tyler Townsend has led the way this summer, putting up terrific numbers for the Winchester Royals of the Valley Baseball League. FIU’s leading home run hitter in 2008 has posted a .405 average while slugging 11 homers, hitting 12 doubles, driving in 34 and getting on base at a .512 clip. Townsend’s outstanding numbers earned him an All-Star nod.

Four other Golden Panthers are seeing action in the Valley League, including three on one team. Lamar Guy, Junior Arrojo and Danny DeSimone are all playing for the Covington Lumberjacks. Guy and Arrojo are burning up the basepaths with 16 and 26 bases swiped, respectively. Desimone, working primarily out of the pen, has posted a 3.60 ERA through 30 innings of work. Steven Stropp rounds out the crop of Golden Panthers in the Valley League. Stropp is hitting .255 with five roundtrippers for the Luray Wranglers.

Over in the Northwoods League, 2008 signee Tim Jobbe and Ty Main are seeing time with the Duluth Huskies. Jobbe earned himself a spot on the All-Star team by hitting .335 with a .414 OBP while belting six homers and driving in 27. Main has a .245 average with five steals.

Playing for the Edenton Steamers of the Coastal Plain League, 2008 All-Sun Belt Conference First Team selection Ryan Mollica is hitting .341 with a home run and 15 driven in.

Javi Sujo of the Orlando Suns in the Florida Collegiate Summer League is hitting .257, but his on base percentage is .413.

Last, but certainly not least, is 2008 signee Scott Rembisz. A transfer from Manatee Community College where he earned himself a spot on the NJCAA All-Star Team, was a Second Team All-American, and was named Florida JUCO pitcher of the year, Rembisz started game one for Team USA in a series against Chinese Taipei. Rembisz tossed three innings without allowing an earned run, while striking out two.
