OMAHA, Neb. – After allowing two hits to the first two hitters of the game, Stanford pitchers did not allow another hit until the sixth inning and the Cardinal picked up an 8-3 victory over Miami (Fla.) in an elimination game Tuesday at the Men’s College World Series.

Stanford (41-23-2) advances to play Georgia Friday at 1 p.m. The Miami season ends at 53-11 and marks the ninth-straight year that the top overall national seed will not win the national championship.

Danny Sandbrook started for the Cardinal and pitched four innings, allowing just two hits and only one run. Erik Davis (8-3) got the win in relief, also going four-plus innings and allowing two runs with six strikeouts.

Offensively, Cord Phelps was 3-for-5 with a double, triple and two RBI and was just a home run away from hitting for the cycle.

Miami scored a run in the first after the first two batters singled to lead off the game. A pair of stolen bases allowed Mark Sobolewski to drive in the first run of the game.

In the third, Stanford Cord Phelps began the inning with a double, then moved to third on Joey August’s single. An infield hit by Jason Castro scored Phelps and a sacrifice put runners at second and third with one out. Randy Molina’s sacrifice fly scored August to put the Cardinal in front.

A leadoff walk in the Stanford fourth led to another run, but the big Cardinal blow came in the fifth. After a Brent Milleville singled to lead off the inning, Sean Ratliff crushed a 1-0 pitch from Miami starter Enrique Garcia several rows into the bleachers in right field to give Stanford a 5-1 lead. After an error and an infield single Phelps tripled for his third hit of the game and the Cardinal had a 7-1 edge.

A two-out double by Toby Gerhart in the sixth drove home the final run of the game for Stanford in the sixth, as the Cardinal’s largest lead was 8-1.

Miami added solo runs in the seventh and eighth to close the gap to 8-3 and had runners on second and third with no outs in the ninth. Stanford reliever Drew Storen forced a foul out, a strikeout and a line drive right back to the pitcher to end the threat unscathed.
