2008 Omaha Cheatsheet: Miami (FL)

The Miami (FL) Hurricanes will be making their 23rd College World Series appearance and 11th under head coach Jim Morris. The Hurricanes enter Omaha with a 52-9 overall record after taking the final two games of the Super Regional against the Arizona Wildcats (6-3 L, 14-10 W, 4-2 W). The Hurricanes swept through the Coral Gables Regional with victories over Bethune Cookman (7-4), Missouri (6-5), and Ole Miss (11-2).

The Hurricanes have one of the top offenses in the entire country with a team batting average of .322 with two first round picks in Jemile Weeks and Yonder Alonso who are tied for the team lead with a .367 average. Alonso leads the team with 23 homers and 71 RBI while Weeks bats in the second spot in the lineup where he has scored 79 runs on the year. Blake Tekotte is the leadoff hitter for the Canes where he has hit at .357 while sophomore Ryan Jackson has a .354 average for fourth best on the team.

The Hurricanes pitching staff has been led all season by freshman sensation Chris Hernandez who has a perfect 11-0 record with a 2.62 ERA. Carlos Gutierrez who was a first round pick in last week’s MLB draft holds down the bullpen with a 5-3 record and an ERA of 3.02 with 13 saves. The starting rotation is filled out by sophomore Eric Erickson who is 8-1 with a 4.32 ERA and senior Enrique Garcia with a record of 7-2 and ERA of 4.56.
