From CBB News Sources

(Tempe, AZ) – A dominant starting pitching performance by Josh Satow propelled No. 3 Arizona State to a 12-0 win over Oklahoma Sunday night in the championship game of the Tempe Regional in front of a crowd of 2,553 at Winkles Field-Packard Stadium at Brock Ballpark. The win makes the Sun Devils 48-11 on the season, and they advance to the Super Regional round of the NCAA Tournament where they will face either San Diego or Fresno State.

Satow allowed only three hits and one walk with five strikeouts over 7.1 innings to earn the win and improve to 9-3 on the season. Oklahoma had runners on the corners with one out in the first, but Satow got a foul out and a groundout to get out of the jam, and that began a stretch of 15 straight Sooner hitters retired.

The Sun Devils jumped on top with an RBI double by Kiel Roling to left center in the second and then they opened it up in the third inning. Ike Davis and Petey Paramore had back-to-back RBI singles, Matt Newman drew a bases-loaded walk and Greg Bordes then hit a bases-clearing three-run double to center to make it 7-0.

ASU added to its lead with runs in the next two innings, as Paramore drove in a run with a double to left center in the fourth and Ryan Sontag had an RBI single through the right side in the fifth.

Roling then hit his eighth home run of the season, a long blast to left center, in the seventh. Jason Kipnis added a solo homer of his own, his 14th, and Roling had an RBI single in the eighth to cap off the scoring.

Davis and Roling had three hits each to lead the ASU offense, while Sontag, Kipnis and Paramore added two hits apiece. Davis also pitched a perfect ninth inning in his first appearance on the mound since April 22.

Davis was named the Most Outstanding Player of the Tempe Regional, as he was 8-for-13 with five RBI and seven runs scored in the three games. Six other Sun Devils joined him on the Regional All-Tournament Team: Paramore, Bordes, Brett Wallace, Sontag, Satow and Mike Leake. Oklahoma’s Aaron Baker, Mike Gosse and Aljay Davis and Vanderbilt’s Steven Liddle rounded out the 11-man team.

The Sun Devils will now host the winner of Monday’s game between San Diego and Fresno State in the Super Regional round. The best-of-three series will begin either Friday or Saturday at Winkles Field-Packard Stadium at Brock Ballpark.

(Tempe, AZ)The Oklahoma Sooners’ magical run over the last three weeks ended on Sunday with a 12-0 defeat at the hands of No. 4 Arizona State in the championship round of the 2008 Tempe Regional at Packard Stadium.

The Sooners earned their third bid in the championship round of an NCAA Regional in the last three postseason appearances after defeating No. 22 Vanderbilt, 11-10, earlier on Sunday off Aaron Baker’s two-run, walk-off homer in the bottom of ninth.

The Sun Devils quickly extinguished OU’s momentum after posting an 9-0 advantage after the first five frames, including six runs in the bottom of the third inning.  Arizona State (48-11) advances to super regional play against the winner of the Long Beach Regional next weekend.

“At the end of the day, Arizona State proved to be too much,” said OU head coach Sunny Golloway.  “It’s a terrific lineup and they have terrific arms on the mound.

“But our Oklahoma Sooners’ team is a young team.  And as you go down through the lineups of all the teams in the field, we have a chance to return most of our players and have a chance to be very, very special. And the experience we gained here will be valuable to the future of our program.”

Arizona State took the first lead of the game on Kiel Roling’s double to the gap in left center to bring around Ike Davis who began the bottom of the second inning with a single off Jeremy Erben.

The Sun Devils extended their lead in the bottom of the third frame with six runs.  OU’s 7-0 deficit after three innings was identical to the start from Saturday night’s meeting with Arizona State.  The Sooners gave up five hits and two walks in the inning, including four consecutive singles and a three-run double by Greg [edit from original report] Bordes.

The extra-base hit by Bordes ended Erben’s start.  The OU starter dropped to 1-4 on the season after allowing seven runs off eight hits in 2 2/3 innings of work.

ASU starter Josh Satow cruised to the victory behind his club’s 15 hits.  Satow improved to 9-3 after scattering three hits and a walk over 7 1/3 innings.

The Sooners placed runners in scoring position in the first, sixth and eighth innings but were unable to break up the shutout.  Jamie Johnson, Mike Gosse, Bryant Hernandez and Matt Harughty combined for OU’s four hits in the ballgame.
Following the final game of the regional, Aaron Baker, Mike Gosse and Aljay Davis were named to the All-Tournament Team.

The Sooners finished the season at 36-26-1 in 2008.  The Sooners can return all but seven seniors from this year’s club (Aljay Davis, Jarod Freeman, Mike Gosse, Jake McCarter, Ryan Mottern, Drew Roberts and Zach Sawyer) as the 2008 MLB Draft will take place on June 5-6.

Game Notes: Aljay Davis’ career-high 16-game hitting streak ended in the season finale … The streak, which featured 22 hits, tied Mike Gosse for the longest of the season … Davis also finished the season by hitting safely in 24 of the last 26 games (38 hits) … OU is 68-60 lifetime in the NCAA Tournament in 31 appearances … OU has turned at least one double play in 11 of the last 12 games and has 22 in that span … The Sooners and Sun Devils have met six times in the NCAA Tournament with ASU leading 4-2 after Sunday’s game.
