Vanderbilt sweeps Tennessee:

Knoxville – Dominic de la Osa (pictured) became Vanderbilt’s all-time hits and doubles leader with a pair of doubles on Sunday. Vanderbilt swept the weekend despite a major home run surge by the Vols all weekend. VU had solid pitching outings by Mikie Minor and Caleb Cotham, while Kentrell Davis impressed for Tennessee with a triple and two homers on Sunday.

  • Friday – VU 8, UT 5
  • Saturday – VU 9, UT 2
  • Sunday – VU 10, UT 8

Georgia takes 2 of 3 from Ole Miss:

Athens – Georgia gave up a late Saturday lead to drop game two to Ole Miss; however, they stormed back on Sunday with a convincing 11-4 win behind home runs from Gordon Beckham, Lyle Allen, Matt Cerione and Michael Demperio.

  • Friday – UGA 5, OM 4
  • Saturday – OM 9, UGA 4
  • Sunday – UGA 11, OM 4

South Carolina takes 2 from Florida:

Columbia – The heart of the Gamecock lineup (Justin Smoak, James Darnell and Phil Disher) all homered to help lead South Carolina to the series win. Disher ended the game 4-4 with 2 runs, 2 RBI and a walk.

  • Friday – UF 9, SC 3
  • Saturday – SC 6, UF 5
  • Sunday – SC 9, UF 6

LSU Sweeps In Lexington:

Lexington – Is Skip Bertman getting a clarion call in his last year as AD, or what? LSU extended their win streak to nine over the weekend with a clean sweep of Kentucky. After a rainout on Friday, LSU bulldozed the UK lineup, holding the SEC’s top lineup to just 6 runs in 19 innings on Saturday.

  • Saturday – LSU 3, UK 1 (10 IP)
  • Saturday – LSU 12, UK 5
  • Sunday – LSU 9, UK 8

Arkansas Salvages Last Game Against Bama:

Fayetteville – Solid relief pitching helped Arkansas steal game three against the Crimson Tide. In the Bottom of the eighth, Casey Coon led off with a double. On Coon’s steal of third, the throw sailed into left field allowing Coon to score the deciding run.

  • Friday – AL 11, AR 7
  • Saturday – AL 11, AR 6
  • Sunday – AR 5, AL 4

MSU Drops Another Series:

Auburn – Luke Greinke pitched six solid innings and David Cunningham had three hits and two RBI to lead the Tigers to an easy win over MSU. Ron Polk’s swan song continues to be a nightmare, as Mississippie State is all but eliminated from Hoover contention at 7-17 in SEC play (see comment section below for breakdown).

  • Friday – AU 11, MSU 4
  • Saturday – MSU 4, AU 3
  • Sunday – AU 8, MSU 2

Post script, actually, looking at the math again, I think LSU could theoretically get into hoover with some serious luck.

As of now, they can’t rank higher than:
UGA (record)
VU (record)
South Carolina (tie break)
Florida (tie break)

Assume that MSU finishes 6-0:

One more win guarantees the following teams will be ahead of MSU:
LSU (MSU and Auburn)
Bama (UF and UGA)
Ole Miss (Auburn and UK)

Two more wins guarantees the following teams will be ahead of MSU:
Kentucky (UT and Ole Miss)
Arkansas (SC and MSU)

Three more wins guarantees the following teams will be ahead of MSU:
Tennessee (UK and SC)
Auburn (Ole Miss and LSU)

Realistically, the breakdown with teams playing each other means that MSU has virtually no shot at the post season.
For example, either Auburn or Ole Miss will be ahead of MSU after their series is over. And if Auburn doesn’t sweep Ole Miss next weekend, at least two of Auburn, Ole Miss and LSU will be ahead of MSU in the standings at the end of the year.

Ron Polk engineered a great run at the end of last year, so who knows. But it looks like a sure thing they’ll avoid the post season this year.
