ACC Weekend Preview for May 2nd-May 5th

Florida State at Clemson

The Florida State Seminoles head to Clemson SC for a Saturday-Monday series against the Clemson Tigers. The Seminoles enter with a 37-7 overall record while being 19-5 in the ACC. The Seminoles have been one of the better hitting teams in the country with a team batting average of .346. All-American catcher candidate Buster Posey is the top hitter on the team with a .470 average and a team leading 13 homers on the year. Matt Fairel has been the ace of the staff with an 8-1 record with a 2.81 ERA.

The Clemson Tigers have a 24-20-1 record with a conference record of 10-13-1. The Tigers have struggled throughout the year on the mound and at the plate. The Tigers are hitting .281 as a team this year which is led by Mike Freeman who has a .326 average. The Tiger pitching staff has an ERA of 4.45 with D.J. Mitchell leading the staff with a 5-3 record with an ERA of 2.88.

Maryland at Boston College

The Maryland Terrapins head to Boston College between two of the teams battling for the last spot in the ACC Tournament. The Terrapins enter the weekend with a 26-21 record while being 8-16 in the ACC. Boston College enters with a 21-24 record while being 5-19 in the ACC. The Terrapins top pitcher this season has been Scott Swinson who has many impressive victories on the year as he has a 4-3 record with a 5.40 ERA. Nick Jowers leads the team in hitting with a .338 average while Mike Murphy leads the team with 12 homers and 37 RBI. The Boston College Eagles are in the midst of a nine game conference losing streak while losing 15 out of the last 18 games in the conference. The Eagles top pitcher heading into the season in Terry Doyle has been horrible as he has a 3-6 record with a 7.47 ERA. The Eagles top hitter this season has been freshman Matt Hamlet who has a .320 average in 39 games this season.

Coastal Carolina at Georgia Tech

The Coastal Carolina Chanticleers (37-9, 12-3 Big South) travel to Atlanta for an out-of-conference weekend series against the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets (31-13, 12-12 ACC).

The Chanticleers enter the series off a 12-1 victory at VMI and a 9-1 victory over the Citadel. Coastal Carolina’s offense is led by sophomore Adam Rice (.369, 8 HR, 33 RBI), junior catcher Dock Doyle (.355, 11 HR, 47 RBI), and freshman third baseman Scott Woodward (.344, 30 SB). Their pitching staff has held opponents to a 3.66 ERA on .252 batting. Coastal Carolina has already faced Maryland, Virginia Tech, North Carolina, Clemson, Wake Forest, North Carolina State, and Virginia this season, going a combined 8-2 against their ACC opponents.

Georgia Tech’s offense has been on fire as of late, batting .361 while averaging 11 runs and 13.25 hits over its last 8 games. Junior right fielder Charlie Blackmon (.366, 29 RBI, 17 SB), junior designated hitter Luke Murton (.365, 9 HR, 36 RBI), freshman center fielder Jeff Rowland (.359, 18 RBI, 18 SB) and freshman shortstop Derek Dietrich (.327, 13 HR, 50 RBI) lead the Yellow Jackets’ offense. Georgia Tech is 19-1 in non-conference games this season; Coastal Carolina will be Tech’s first Big South opponent of 2008.
