Fresno St. Blows Past NMSU 24-6

LAS CRUCES, NM-For the second straight weekend the Fresno State baseball team swept a four-game series from a conference opponent. Last weekend the Bulldogs took four games from Louisiana Tech and this weekend the Dogs took four at New Mexico State after beating the Aggies 24-6 in seven innings on Sunday afternoon at Presley Askew Field.

The Bulldogs outscored New Mexico State 59-22 in the four game series. Fresno State is now 24-16 and 13-3 in WAC play while New Mexico State dropped to 18-23 and 5-11 in conference. The 24 runs are the fourth most runs scored in a game in school history.

The Bulldogs scored their 24 runs on 17 hits led by a 4 for 5 day with four RBIs from Steve Detwiler. Steve Susdorf was 3 for 4 with 2 RBIs while Danny Muno was 2 for 3 with 3 RBIs. Erik Wetzel also had three hits on the day. Ten different Fresno State players recorded hits on the afternoon.

Hedstrom and Tommy Mendonca both hit grand slams while Muno also hit a homerun in the game.

Justin Miller earned the win and improved his record to 6-0 as he pitched five innings, while scattering eight hits and striking out four. The New Mexico State pitching staff struggled all afternoon as four pitchers combined to walk 12 Bulldogs. Three different Fresno State players were also hit by pitches from the Aggie pitching staff.

Fresno State led 2-1 after the first inning but then broke the game open in the third by scoring seven runs on only two hits to lead 9-1.

The scoring started with one out and Susdorf reaching base via the walk. He later advance to second on a New Mexico State error. Then with two outs Ryan Overland walked and Detwiler reached base on an infield single to load the bases with two outs. Mendonca then was hit by a pitch, allowing Susdorf to score and the bases to remain loaded.

Another walk by Muno scored Detwiler. Then with the bases still loaded Hedstrom hit a grand-slam over the left-center fence to give the Dogs the 9-1 lead.

The Bulldogs plated two more runs in the fourth to extend the lead to 11-1. After the Aggies scored two in the bottom half of the fourth, Fresno State added three more runs in the top of the fifth to lead 14-3 but New Mexico State wouldn’t die as they scored three runs in the bottom half of the inning to cut the Bulldog lead to 14-6.

Fresno State then scored three in the sixth and seven in the seventh to earn its fifth mercy rule win of the season.
