CLINTON, Miss. — The 6th-ranked University of Texas at Tyler baseball team captured its third American Southwest Conference Eastern Division championship in five years by sweeping a doubleheader with Mississippi College, 17-5 and 6-2, in Clinton on Saturday afternoon.
In the matinee, UT Tyler scored 17 runs off of 19 hits, with nine of the runs coming in the fourth inning. Junior Jared Hood and seniors Andrew Damewood and Kyle Braden each hit homeruns on the day. Hood finished the game by going 3-for-4 with three runs and five RBIs.
Junior pitcher Brett Holland gave up eight hits, but allowed no earned runs as he earned his 9th win of the year.
Despite putting up 13 hits, the Patriots struggled to score runners in game two, but would capitalize on four Choctaw errors to win, 6-2. Jared Hood once again went 3-for-4 in the game, this time earning one RBI.
Junior Blake Booher allowed just two runs over six innings with nine strikeouts as he moved to 10-0 on the season. Junior Beau Ziegler came in to close out the final three innings of the game for UT Tyler. Ziegler allowed no runs off of one hit while striking out five batters in the appearance, to pick up his fourth save of the year.
Going into the final game of the regular season, the Patriots are 33-6 overall and 15-2 in the ASC, while Mississippi is 21-17 and 12-5 in league play.
UT Tyler and the Choctaws will return to Frierson Field on Sunday at 1 p.m. for each team’s regular season finale.

Mississippi College rebounded to win the third game of the series, clinching a home playoff series for the Choctaws in the first round of the American Southwest Conference tournament.
It also forces the 23rd-ranked University of the Ozarks to go on the road for their first round series.
