Jefferies’ Career Day Gives Aggies Series Victory Over Gauchos

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – UC Davis scored five runs in the 11th inning, and junior catcher Jake Jefferies had a career-best five hits and six RBI’s off three two-run doubles to help the Aggies claim an 18-14 victory and series win over UC Santa Barbara in a Big West Conference baseball game live on Big West TV Sunday afternoon at Caesar Uyesaka Stadium.

UC Davis tallied a season-high run total for the second consecutive game to improve its overall record to 23-11 and 5-1 in conference. UC Santa Barbara, who lost its second straight home game after losing only once at home entering the series, is 23-11 and 6-3. The Aggies rebounded after losing the first game of the series to win the next two games and claim their second conference series of the season.

UC Davis overcame a three-run deficit with two runs in the eighth and ninth innings to take a one-run lead heading into the bottom of the ninth. The Gauchos scored the tying run off a Brian Gump RBI single to send the game into extra innings. Scoma had a two-run single in the eighth, and Royster and Kelly drove in the runs in the ninth.

The Aggies scored five runs in the 11th inning to earn their third extra-inning victory of the season. UC Santa Barbara scored a run to bring the final mark to 18-14. Jefferies recorded his third two-run double of the game to highlight the big inning. Ryan Royster, Kevin James and Ryan Scoma drove in the other Aggie runs in the inning.

Jefferies had a career-high five hits, six RBI’s and three doubles to highlight the Aggies’ big offensive day. Ty Kelly finished with four hits, a double and two RBI’s while Royster and Scoma each drove in four runs. The game featured a total of 13 doubles. Kyle Mihaylo also had two doubles for the Aggies.

Justin Fitzgerald pitched 2.1 innings to earn his third victory of the season.

The Gauchos scored three runs in the first inning to take an early lead. Shane Carlson singled home two runs and Patrick Rose singled home another in the inning.

The Aggies scored a single run in the second and took the lead with three runs in the third. Mihaylo doubled home the run home in the third. Jefferies doubled home two more in the third and Scoma singled in another two at bats later.

Following a Gaucho run in the fourth, the Aggies put together a five-run sixth inning to take a 9-4 lead. Royster singled home two runs with the bases loaded to start the scoring. Kelly singled in another run and Jefferies doubled in two more to cap the inning.

UC Santa Barbara got its highest scoring inning of the series in the seventh inning with seven runs to reclaim a three-run lead at 11-9. Rose had two more RBI’s in the inning.

Matt McColgan hit a two-run homer in the Gauchos’ big seventh inning. Carlson and Rose each drove in three runs to lead the Guachos.
