The College Baseball Blog went down to Brockton MA to take in a doubleheader between Boston College and Duke. The Eagles swept the doubleheader with a 3-2 victory in game one and a 6-0 shutout in Game 2.

Game 1 Recap

Boston College starter Terry Doyle worked out of multiple jams as he went seven innings while allowing two runs on seven hits and three walks. The Duke Blue Devils scored two runs in the second inning with one scoring on a Jake Lemmerman single to right field and on a groundball to third base by Ryan McCurdy. Doyle was able to keep the Devils off the scoreboard the rest of the game. BC was able to get back a run in the bottom of the second with a run scoring single by Barry Butera to put the score at 2-1 after two innings. The Eagles would score two runs in the fifth inning on a fielder’s choice ground out by Garret Smith and a single from John Spatola to take the lead at 3-2. Doyle pitched through the seventh inning as he was relieved by Nick Asselin who pitched 2 innings while allowing only one hit to pick up his first save of the year.

Game 2 Recap

Dan Houston had one of his best outings in his career by pitching seven shutout innings while allowing only four hits and two walks. He only struck out three batters on the day but kept the Blue Devils off balance throughout the game. Duke starter Will Currier pitched five innings but had no breaking ball early on in the game as the Eagles scored two runs in the first inning to jump out to the 2-0 lead. They would add a single runs in the second and third innings while picking up two more runs in the sixth inning to add up to the final scoreline of 6-0. The Eagles offense was led by Michael Belfiore and Sam Shaughnessy who each went 2-4. Belfiore picked up two RBI while Shaughnessy had an RBI.

I was very impressed with the discipline of Boston College’s Sam Shaughnessy who went 3-5 in the doubleheader with three walks in Game 1. Garrett Smith continued to show that he is one of the top shortstops in the ACC making a spectacular double play in Game 2 and showing some pop in his bat which will not show up in the box score.

The Blue Devils seemed to be lifeless on the day with very little emotion coming from the players or coaches. Alex Hassan showed some pop at the plate with a sweet stroke and playing a solid center field.

I don’t know what I am talking about…BC looked real good today and Duke looked horrible. What can I do about that? Not much.
