CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Freshman catcher Yasmani Grandal drove in the game-winning run after junior Dave DiNatale hit a two-run game-tying single in the bottom of the eighth as No. 2 Miami rallied to defeat Bethune-Cookman, 7-6, Wednesday night at Mark Light Field. Junior right-hander Carlos Gutierrez tossed the final inning to record his fifth save for the Hurricanes, who improved to 19-2 on the season.

UNC 13 Gardner-Webb 2

CARY, N.C. – No. 3 North Carolina continued its recent offensive outburst Wednesday with a 13-2 win over Gardner-Webb at Cary’s USA Baseball National Training Complex. Using a balanced attack, the Tar Heels (20-4) eclipsed the 10-run mark for the fourth straight game and pounded out a double-digit hit total for the sixth consecutive contest.

With the win over the Bulldogs, Carolina became the seventh team in the nation to reach the 20-win mark this season.

Paced by a career-high tying four hits from first baseman Dustin Ackley and three-hit efforts by second baseman Kyle Seager and catcher Tim Federowicz, every Tar Heel in the starting line-up hit safely against Gardner-Webb (9-13).

FSU 19 Stetson 3

Tallahassee, Fla. – Florida State (21-2) swept a two-game series from Stetson (11-13) with a 19-3 victory Wednesday night on Mike Martin Field inside Dick Howser Stadium. The Seminoles extended their win streak to nine straight games over the Hatters as the Garnet and Gold set a season-high for runs scored eclipsing the previous mark of 18 set last Sunday against Virginia Tech. Florida State’s 19 runs were the most scored in the series since a 21-12 victory by the Seminoles back on March 24, 1959.

George Washington 17 UVA 5

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA – George Washington baseball (12-9) pounded out 18 hits as they rallied from a 5-1 deficit and scored 16 unanswered runs to upset No. 15 Virginia (20-5) by a final score of 17-5 Wednesday evening at Davenport Field, earning their first win over the Cavaliers since 1988. The Colonials improved their all-time mark against UVa to 5-9 as they picked up their first win in Charlottesville since 1986.

For Virginia, ranked 19th in the Baseball America poll and 15th in both the NCBWA and USA Today/ESPN Top 25 polls, the loss snapped a school-record 18-game home winning streak.

Clemson 2 Elon 1

Three Tiger pitchers combined to retire the last 18 batters, as Clemson topped Elon 2-1 at Doug Kingsmore Stadium on Wednesday in front of 4,502 fans. Craig Gullickson, Justin Sarratt, and Ryan Hinson yielded only one run, four hits, and no walks while striking out 13. The Tigers, who won the midweek series 2-0, improved to 16-7, while the Phoenix dropped to 19-6.

Gullickson (3-0) went 5.0 innings to pick up the win, allowing one run on four hits while striking out eight and walking none. Sarratt, who did not factor into the decision, pitched 2.0 perfect innings while striking out two. Hinson also pitched 2.0 perfect innings to record his first save of the season and second of his career.

Duke 10 North Carolina Central 2

DURHAM, N.C. – Alex Hassan and Gabriel Saade drove in three runs apiece, while four Duke pitchers combined to hold N.C. Central to two runs as the Blue Devils topped the Eagles 10-2 Wednesday evening at Durham Bulls Athletic Park in the first-ever baseball game between the Durham-based institutions.

The historic game drew 1,017 spectators, which was a school-record for N.C. Central (6-17) and the fourth straight road contest in which Duke (21-5, 4-5 ACC) played in front of a four-figure crowd.

Saade collected three hits in his four at bats, while Hassan mashed his second home run of the season and scored three times. The Blue Devils struck early with back-to-back four run innings in the second and third, while starter Jonathan Foreman (1-0) gave up just one hit through five innings to pick up his first win of the season.

Boston College 11 Holy Cross 2

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Boston College (11-11, 2-7 ACC) used an eight-run sixth inning, highlighted by back-to-back home runs by Tony Sanchez and Eric Campbell, to defeat Holy Cross (4-13, 0-0 Patriot League) 11-2, Wednesday afternoon at Commander Shea Field.

In the sixth inning, BC scored eight times off six hits capped off by a three-run blast from Sanchez, followed by a solo home run by Campbell to break the game open.

Marshall 3 NC State 0

RALEIGH, N.C. – Marshall University junior right fielder Kurt Lipton blasted an RBI double to right field and the Marshall pitching staff hurled a shutout to help lift the Herd to a 3-0 victory and series split with North Carolina State in Wednesday afternoon’s non-conference baseball game at Doak Field at Dail Park.

With the win, Marshall snaps a six-game losing skid and improves to 9-12 overall, while North Carolina State falls to 14-8 on the season.

After posting a 1-0 lead and being held scoreless through five innings, Marshall plated a pair of runs in the top of the seventh. Senior left fielder Jeff Rowley drew a lead-off walk, advanced to second on a ground out and scored on Lipton’s RBI double to right field. Lipton advanced to third on a wild pitch and then scored the Herd’s third run of the game when freshman catcher Kevin Shackelford reached safely on a throwing error. Junior shortstop Adam Yeager added a single in the frame but NC State escaped without any further damage, down 3-0.

Maryland 6 UMBC 5

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Pinch-hitter Bill Rice ripped a two-out, bases-clearing double to erase a two-run deficit and lift the University of Maryland to a 6-5 victory in a non-conference college baseball game Wednesday played before 349 at Shipley Field.

Maryland improved to 13-11 with the victory, while the Retrievers fell to 6-10.

Jensen Pupa went 4-for-5 to lead a 10-hit Terrapin offense, including a double. He also scored three runs for Maryland. Nick Jowers chipped in with a 2-for-3 night.

Shawn Retz led the UMBC offense with three hits and a pair of RBIs.

Charlotte 12 Wake Forest 8

Charlotte, N.C. – Designated hitter Rob Lyerly drove in four runs on two doubles and a home run and senior Chris Taylor hit a home run in his fourth straight game as Charlotte outslugged Wake Forest 12-8 at Robert and Mariam Hayes Stadium Wednesday night. The Niners improve to 18-3 on the season and 15-1 at home. Wake Forest has lost five in a row and drops to 11-11 on the season.

For the sixth time in the last seven games, Charlotte gave up a run in the first inning, with Wake Forest gathering two runs in the first frame. Dustin Hood and Allan Dykstra hit RBI singles in the first for a 2-0 lead.
