Temple 9 Rhode Island 6

KINGSTON, RI (3/22/08) – Temple scored seven runs in the fourth inning and won for the fourth straight game with a 9-6 victory over Rhode Island on Saturday at Bill Beck Field. Junior Kyle Obal (Derwood, MD / Sherwood) had four hits and two RBI, while freshman Byron McKoy (Charlotte, NC / Independence) was a triple away from the cycle and had three hits. Junior Matt Mongiardini (Toms River, NJ / Toms River East) improved to 4-0 with six innings on the mound and senior Arshwin Asjes (Willemstad, Curacao / Cheverus-ME) pitched a scoreless ninth for his third save.

Liberty 12 Columbia 2

A four-run second inning and a strong mound effort by Dustin Umberger helped lift the Liberty Flames past the Columbia Lions, 12-2, Saturday afternoon, in the finale of a four-game series between the two teams played at Lynchburg’s City Stadium.With the victory, Liberty moves to 11-9 on the season. Columbia drops to 4-13.

The Flames staked themselves to an advantage they never relinquished in the second inning. First baseman David Giammaresi (Sr., Coral Springs, Fla.) singled to lead off the frame and scored the first run of the contest when Lion left fielder Jason Banos mishandled a double by Jeff Jefferson (Fr., Danvile, Va.).

San Diego 18 Harvard 2

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The 19th-ranked University of San Diego baseball team (16-7) used a hit parade of 19 team hits to help propel them to an 18-2 win over Harvard University Saturday afternoon at USD’s Cunningham Stadium to complete a double-header sweep over the Crimson.

Kevin Muno went 3-for-5 with one home run and three RBI, Kevin Hansen went 3-for-4 with one double and four RBI, and James Meador went 3-for-5 with two RBI to lead the Toreros’ offense in the win.

The Toreros did most of their scoring damage in the third inning as they put up seven runs on three hits. Muno led off the inning by being hit by a pitch and advanced to second on a Sean Nicol walk. Muno then stole third and Nicol stole second to give USD runners at second and third with one out. After Josh Romanski was hit by a pitch to load the bases, Meador was hit by a pitch to push across the first run. Anthony Strazzara then drove in Nicol with a RBI single, Logan Gelbrich brought in the third run when he was hit by a pitch and the next two runs came on a Hansen two-run double to left field. A Zach Walters RBI ground out to the shortstop and a Muno RBI single capped the scoring for the inning to give USD an 8-1 lead.

Brown 25 Hartford 9

Asheville, NC – Every Bear starter had at least two hits as the Brown baseball team (4-4) cruised to a 25-9 win over Hartford (3-8) at Greenwood Field in Asheville, N.C. on Saturday. The Bears got out to a huge lead early, scoring nine runs on six hits and three errors in the first inning, and eventually finished with 22 hits, taking advantage of eight Hawk errors.

Senior designated hitter Conor Reardon (Branford, CT) paced the offensive attack, going 4-for-6 with three runs and three RBIs. Freshman catcher Matt Colantonio (Garden City, NY) went 3-for-5 with a walk, driving in a team-high four runs and scoring twice. Sophomore right fielder Nick Puñal (Palm Beach, FL) had a team high with five runs scored, going 2-for-5 with three runs batted in.

UConn 12 Louisville 8

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – A thrilling four-run rally by the University of Louisville tied the game with two out in the bottom of the ninth, but UConn responded with four of their own in the top of the 10th to capture a 12-8 win over the Cards and salvage the final game of the series.

“We gave a good effort, but it just was not enough today,” noted Head Coach Dan McDonnell.

“It hurts when you have a chance to win and you don’t get it done.”

UConn (8-10, 3-3 BIG EAST) leadoff batter Pierre LaPage singled and stole second on a close play, ahead of an RBI single by Pat Mahoney that gave the Huskies a 1-0 lead for the third time in as many games.

Coastal Carolina 18 Albany 4

CONWAY, S.C. – The 18th-ranked Coastal Carolina University baseball team (17-4) pounded out season highs in both runs and hits in the 18-4 win over Albany (4-13-1) March 22 at Watson Stadium/Vrooman Field. Coastal had 22 hits on the day.

Coastal went quietly in the first, but scored four runs in the second. Sophomore Jose Iglesias (Miami, Fla./St. John’s) singled to open the frame. Freshman Scott Woodward (Markle, Ind./Norwell) would reach on a bunt single. Both runners would move up on a wild pitch. It looked as if Albany starter Cory Warrings would get out of the jam, inducing two pop outs, but freshman Rico Noel (Lawton, Okla./Lawton) doubled over the Great Dane left fielder, scoring Iglesias and Woodward. Junior David Sappelt (Saxapahaw, N.C./Southern Alamance) brought in Noel with a double, his second of the day, making it 3-0 Coastal. Junior David Anderson (Lexington, S.C./White Knoll) drove in the last run of the inning with a single to right, scoring Sappelt.
