LUBBOCK, Texas — The No. 18 Texas Longhorns posted a historic performance to record a 22-6 win over the Texas Tech Red Raiders in Big 12 Conference baseball action Thursday evening at Dan Law Field.

The Longhorns scored their most runs ever in a Big 12 Conference game in the victory. Texas’ previous best came in an 18-5 win over Oklahoma on April 2, 2000. The Longhorns had also scored 19 runs last season against Kansas State in the Big 12 Conference Championship, considered a non-league game. The tally also equaled the most scored by UT in any league game since beating Southwestern Conference foe Houston 22-7 on March 17, 1996.

Texas (15-5, 3-1) scored multiple runs six innings, including six in the third, four in the sixth and five in the ninth. The Horns tallied a season-high 22 hits and drew 11 walks.

The Burnt Orange opened up a 2-0 lead in the first inning and never trailed. Texas was clinging to a precarious 4-3 lead before dropping a half dozen runs on the Red Raiders in the top of the third.

Michael Torres and Jordan Danks led the Longhorns’ offensive arsenal. Torres went 5-for-6 with one home run, three runs and five RBI. Danks went 4-for-7 with one double, one triple and five RBI. He extended hit streak to 13 games, but had his consecutive stolen base string snapped at 32.

Tant Shepherd went 3-for-5 with his first collegiate home run, three runs scored and three RBI and fellow freshman Cameron Rupp went 2-for-3 with four runs scored and extended his team-long hit streak to 15 games. Other strong performances were recorded by Travis Tucker (three RBI), Preston Clark (2-for-5, three runs) and David Hernandez (2-for-4, two runs, two RBI). Kevin Keyes hit his first collegiate home run in the ninth inning.

Brandon Workman (3-1) picked up the win with 5.1 innings of relief. He fanned six and allowed just one run on three hits and two walks. Hunter Harris closed out the game with one scoreless inning of relief.

Nathan Karns (1-3) was saddled with the loss for Tech. He allowed eight runs on six hits and six walks over 2.2 innings.

Chris Hall, Doug Thennis, Monk Kreder, Taylor Ashby and Tanner Rindels each had two hits for Texas Tech who fell to 10-9 overall and 1-3 in Big 12 play.

Texas and Texas Tech meet at Dan Law Field for game two of the three-game series Friday at 6 p.m.
