South Florida 7, Florida Atlantic 6
A sacrifice fly from Brandon Smith in the bottom of the seventh inning broke a 6-6 tie as University of South Florida defeated Florida Atlantic University (7-5) 7-6 at Red McEwen Field in Tampa Tuesday night.
USF got to Florida Atlantic starter Brandon Kloess in the second inning scoring five runs on five hits. The first fout batters of the inning singled off of Kloess and a walk and hit batter. After manufacturing three runs, Freshman Ryan Lockwood stroked a single to center field with the bases loaded that plated two more runs making it a 5-0 advantage for the Bulls.
The Owls plated two-out runs in three separate innings to rally from being down 5-0. With two outs in the top of the six inning, Junior first baseman Travis Ozga hit a clutch RBI single to tie the game up 6-6.
Adam Morrison (1-1), who came in on relief for Kloess, pitched a terrific 4.2 innings of work but it wasn;t enough as South Florida rallied for a run on Smith’s sacrifice fly in the seventh inning.
Lockwood and Joey Angelberger each had a two hits and two RBI to lead USF offensively.
Florida Atlantic’s William Block went 2-for-4 with two runs while Ozga finished with 2 RBI in the losing effort for the Owls.
The Bulls have now won four straight games and will take on North Florida (7-4) at 7 p.m. tonight in Tampa. Florida Atlantic, who have gone 7-2 since being swept by North Carolina to open the season, will face Monmouth tonight at 6:30 in Boca Raton.
No. 8 Mississippi 10, Western Kentucky 3
No. 8 Ole Miss (11-3) used an explosive third inning scoring six runs pn six hits to roll past the Hilltoppers (6-5) 10-3 Tuesday night at the University Stadium in Oxford, Mississippi.
With the game scoreless, Ole Miss would string together six straight hits, including a two-run home run by Michael Guerrero and opened up an early 6-0 lead.
Western Kentucky would respond in the fifth inning as the pushed three runs across with two outs to make it a 6-3 game. Matt Rice would start the rally with a solo homer for the Hilltoppers.
Ole Miss would tack on 4 more runs and the bull pen would pitch 3 scoreless innings to make it a 10-3 final.
The Rebels were led by Brent Basham who finished 3-for-3 with 3 RBI and also Tim Ferguson who also collected three hits. Starter Phillip Irwin pitched 6 innings allowing 1 earned run on eight hits for Mississippi.
In the loss, Matt Hightower went 4-for-4 with a run and an RBI while Matt Rice and Chad Cregar each had a pair of hits for Western Kentucky.
The same two teams are back in action tonight at 6:30 to wrap up the two game series.
