Virginia Tech 14 Davidson 10

DAVIDSON, N.C. – Sophomore Jay Honeycutt was 3-for-5 with a home run and three RBIs for the Davidson baseball team, but Virginia Tech used a six-run eighth inning to post a 14-10 victory over the Wildcats at Wilson Field Wednesday afternoon.

Chase FitzPatrick was 3-for-6 with a double and two RBIs for Davidson (2-3), and Hugh Eden collected four hits and scored two runs. Brett Shore had three hits on the afternoon, while Danny Weiss had two, including a double.

Anthony Sosnoskie was 3-for-4 with two RBIs for the Hokies (2-3), while Austin Wates and Sean O’Brien had two hits each.

Trailing 9-8, Virginia Tech struck for six runs in the top of the eighth inning. O’Brien had an RBI single, while Ty Hohman and Matt Blow each drove in two runs with a single.

Davidson got one back in bottom of the frame as Tommy Piacenza walked, went to third on a Weiss double and scored later on a wild pitch to make the margin 14-10. After a scoreless top of the ninth, Eden led off the home half of the frame with a single, and Kayne walked with one out. But David Cross got the last two batters in order to end the game.

After Virginia Tech scored two runs in the first, Davidson came back with three in the bottom of the inning with the help of a Honeycutt RBI single and a sacrifice fly from Piacenza.

The ‘Cats struck for five runs in the second on the strength of a two-run double from FitzPatrick and a two-run homer by Honeycutt and opened an 8-2 cushion. Each team scored a run in the third, but the Hokies put five up in the fourth to trim the lead to 9-8.

Davidson is back in action this weekend as the Wildcats host Niagara in a three-game series. Doubleheader action Saturday begins at 1 p.m. at Wilson Field.

The Citadel 3 UNC-Wilmington 1

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Sophomore Richard Jones’ sacrifice fly in the bottom of the seventh broke a 1-all tie as The Citadel edged UNC Wilmington, 3-1, in a pitcher’s duel Wednesday at Riley Park.

The Bulldogs evened their mark at 2-2 while the Seahawks fell to 1-4 with their third straight loss.

Citadel sophomore Nick Sprowl (1-0) earned the win, needing just two pitches to retire the only batter he faced. Sophomore Matt Reifsnider pitched a perfect ninth for the save.

With the score tied in the seventh, the Bulldogs plated the eventual game-winning run without aid of a hit. Sophomore Matt Simonelli drew a leadoff walk off UNCW freshman reliever Stephen Harrold (0-1), who was tagged with the loss, and moved into scoring position following a walk to senior Chris Swauger, this time by Seahawk freshman reliever Cameron Roth. A sacrifice bunt moved both runners up and Jones lifted a sacrifice fly to center to bring in Simonelli.

Seniors Jason Appel and Mark Carver each had two hits for the Seahawks.

Neither starter figured in the decision. UNCW sophomore Kyle Lewis fanned six in 4 1/3 innings, both career-highs, while allowing one run on five hits and a pair of walks. Citadel sophomore Chris McGuiness stymied the Seahawks with five scoreless innings, allowed four hits and struck out three.

Lewis sailed through the first three innings and pitched out of trouble in the fourth, but the Bulldogs broke through in the fifth on Swauger’s RBI single to center that scored Reifsnider, who led off the inning with a single. Harrold (0-1), though, pitched out of a bases loaded threat by closing out the inning with a ground ball out.

The Seahawks quickly tied the game in the top of the sixth on a RBI single to right by Carver off Citadel reliever Raymond Copenhaver. Appel led off with a single, moved to second following a sacrifice bunt and stole third the next batter.

Sophomore Kyle Jordan pushed The Citadel’s lead to 3-1 with a two-out RBI single in the bottom of the eighth inning.

The Seahawks open a four-game homestand on Friday with a 4 p.m. start against Fordham. Saturday’s game has been changed to a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.

Notes: Today’s game was the first between the two teams since the 1994 season … The Citadel now leads the series 7-3 … UNCW stole its first two bases of the season … Hargrave extended his career-long hitting streak to 13 games … After retiring the lead off hitter in each of the first three innings, UNCW failed to do so in the following four innings.
