Alvarez update and Vandy loses to Arizona State

Preseason Player of the Year Pedro Alvarez of Vanderbilt suffered what was called a “slight arm injury” at some point after yesterday’s 8-1 win over Oregon State.

In today’s game between #3 Vanderbilt and #1 Arizona State will feature RS Sophomore Andrew Giobbi at 3rd base.

UPDATE: Kendall Rogers of Rivals.com reports that Pedro injured his arm during pregame warmups and that he is being held out for precautionary reasons. The injury is not considered serious. Read Kendall’s report, here.

GAME UPDATE: There’s not much to say other than the fact that Vandy’s array of new pitchers cannot find the plate and have made this game painful to watch. The highlights of the day have been the arcs of Brett Wallace’s MAMMOTH Grand Slam and his equally stuning 3 run homer. Although Brett Jacobsen looked solid early, he did that using an effective change and curve despite not being able to spot his fastball. It caught up with him eventually and ASU began to build toward their current 17-3 lead (bottom 8th). ASU jumped all over true freshman Sean Bierman (6 runs) and Senior manager-turned junkballer Jason Cunningham (4 runs on 4 plate appearances). On the other side, Mike Leake impressed over 6 solid innings, giving up just two runs on 7 hits without a walk. Ike Davis atoned for two early errors with a 3-4 day at the plate with 2 runs and 4 RBI. Vandy was led by Ryan Flaherty’s two spectacular plays in the field (robbing Davis of a single and turning a nifty double play) and his 6th inning single which extended his 37 game hitting streak.

Great job being all over this

Almost as all over it as ASU has been on Jacobsen and Bierman. 9-0 now. Jake looked very good early with his curve and change, but he was not able to spot his fastball all day and it eventually came back to bite him.

Vandy’s offense is looking a bit sluggish without Pedro in there. Flash’s hitting streak is in Jeopardy, though he’ll have two more cracks at it.

Guys, no desire to do a writeup on this or even watch the rest. Let’s just say it was a woodshed ass-kicking. Wallace with 7 RBI on a salami and a 3 run tater. Vandy pitchers walked 10 and gave up 16 hits in the first 6 innings. Not pretty. Game is over 3 hours and we’re just leaving the 7th.
