Junior outfielders Jordan Danks and Kyle Russell each hit solo home runs to lead the Orange squad to a 6-0 win over the White in an intrasquad scrimmage, the cornerstone of the Longhorns’ Fan Appreciation Day at the newly renovated UFCU Disch-Falk Field on Sunday afternoon.

After two scoreless frames, Danks broke the scoring seal in the bottom of the third inning with a home run off freshman Stayton Thomas to give the Orange a 1-0 lead.

The Orange tacked on four more runs in the bottom fourth. With one out, sophomore Brandon Belt hit a double to centerfield and Kevin Keyes was hit by a pitch. After freshman Cameron Rupp struck out, David Hernandez loaded the bases with a single. Junior Travis Tucker plated Belt and Keyes with a single to right field. Junior Michael Torres singled to centerfield, driving in Hernandez and Tucker and inflating the cushion to 5-0.

The Orange added the final run when Russell, the 2007 NCAA home run champion, deposited a Kyle Walker offering over the rightfield fence.

Tucker and Russell both went 2-for-3 at the plate to lead the Orange. Tucker also stole a pair of bases and drove in two runs.

The Orange pitching staff was dominant, allowing just two hits over seven innings. Freshman Chance Ruffin earned the win, scattering one hit and one walk while striking out three over two innings in relief. Freshman Brandon Workman, the Orange starter, and junior Hunter Harris each pitched two scoreless innings. Belt capped off the game with a scoreless seventh inning.

Freshman Tant Shepherd logged the White team’s only two runs.

Freshman Cole Green, the White starter, pitched two scoreless innings, allowing just one walk while striking out one.

Texas commences the 2008 season on Friday, Feb. 22 with the Longhorns hosting VCU in a three-game series as part of UFCU Disch-Falk Field re-dedication weekend.
