FROM BENTLEY RELEASE
WINTER PARK, Fla. – Sophomore first baseman Garrett Stenhouse (Warwick, R.I./Pilgrim HS) had four hits and four RBI, including a three-run homer during a six-run seventh, but Bentley’s comeback bid came up just short as the Falcons dropped a 10-9 decision to Bryant University in non-conference college baseball Sunday afternoon at Rollins College’s Alfond Stadium.

Bentley, after cutting the deficit to a single run, threatened in the top of the ninth with one-out singles by junior leftfielder Kevin Vona (Belmont, Mass./Belmont HS) and Stenhouse. However, Bryant closer Adam Vuolo (Walpole, Mass.) was able to preserve the lead for his team with a strike out and a game-ending fielder’s choice.

Bryant, 2-1 on the season, had built a 10-3 lead after six innings with DH Pat O’Connor (Mattapoisett, Mass.) doing the bulk of the damage for the Bulldogs. He was three-for-four with eight total bases, three runs scored and five RBI.

O’Connor gave the Falcons problems all afternoon. He doubled in two runs in the first, walked and scored in the third, slugged a three-run homer to left center in the fourth and led off the sixth inning with his second double. He came around to score what proved to be the decisive run on a single by leftfielder TJ Magnell (Leominster, Mass.).

The Bentley offense broke out in the seventh with RBI singles by sophomore centerfielder Brett Damato (Commack, N.Y./Commack HS) and freshman right fielder Chris Hardy (Warwick, R.I./Bishop Hendricken HS) preceding Stenhouse’s home run to right. Another run scored on an error in the inning.

Bentley outhit the Bulldogs 14-13, with Stenhouse one of four Falcons with a multi-hit afternoon. Sophomore shortstop Joe Dorr (Wayland/Wayland HS) was three-for-four, and both Damato and Vona had two hits.

After dropping the first two games against Bryant, Bentley will wrap up its three-game series with the Bulldogs Monday morning at 10 am, also at Alfond Stadium.

FROM ROLLINS COLLEGE RELEASE

WINTER PARK, Fla. (February 17, 2008) – Sophomore right-hander Marc Hewett pitched a complete game win, striking out 10 while allowing just two runs, in the Rollins baseball team’s 8-2 victory against Bryant at Alfond Stadium on Sunday night. The Tars picked up their sixth win in a row, improving to 6-2 overall, while Bryant fell to 2-2 with the loss.

Hewett (2-0) scattered six hits over nine innings, and he did not walk a batter. The only blemish on the record for Hewett was a two-run homerun by Bryant shortstop Pat McKenna in the fourth inning. The Tars hurler had retired the 11 in a row to start the game before allowing a double by center fielder Nick Campbell and McKenna’s homerun the following batter.

Rollins took an early 3-0 lead in the first inning, highlighted by a two-run single by sophomore right fielder Phil Hendricks. Four more runs came home in the third, giving the Tars a 7-0 lead. Junior designated hitter Bryan Bennett, making his first start for the Tars, brought home three of the four runs on a bases loaded double. Bryant got on the board with McKenna’s homerun in the fourth, but that would be all the offense the Bulldogs could mount against Hewett.

Senior center fielder Corey Whiting led the Rollins lineup with three hits in four at bats, including two doubles, a run scored, and two stolen bases. Sophomore catcher Ben Hewett also went 2-4 with two run-scoring singles. Senior left fielder Mike Crane and Hendricks also tallied two hits for the Tars in their sixth straight game with eight or more runs.

Bryant starter Brett Almeida (0-1) was credited with the loss after allowing seven runs through three innings. John Michael Ryan, Mark Andrews, and Scott Merritt combined to give up just one run through the final five innings for the Bulldogs.

The Tars will finish their series against Bryant in a President’s Day game on Monday, February 18 starting at 2:00 p.m. at Alfond Stadium. Fans can listen to all the action live on the Citizens Bank of Florida Tars Sports Network at www.RollinsSports.tv.
