Rice and Kansas Update

We recently ran across some interesting news about the Rice Baseball program. The first article is from the Houston Chronicle writer Moisekapenda Bower who checks in with Cole St. Clair of Rice. He talks about making the move from the closer’s role to the starting rotation for the first time in his career. Coach Wayne Graham and St. Clair believe that this move will help with his recovery from an arm injury suffered in 2006 which allowed him to only be 85 percent during the 2007 campaign. The full Q and A is available here. Mr. Bower also talked with Wayne Graham about his starting lineup on February 11th about how he develops his lineups with the Owls. The article is available here.

We also came across some great articles about the Kansas Baseball program from Rock Chalk Talk. There are two great articles on the site as one of them is an excellent breakdown of the incoming freshmen class which is loaded with some talented players. The full article is available here. The other article focuses on the pro prospects of the players on the Kansas team and can be read here.

Just as an FYI (for those Texas fans), it has been announced that Cole will be starting the Saturday game at Long Beach State, which means the big lefty should also be slated to start the showcase Saturday night game of the Minute Maid Classic (the following week) against Texas. However, as was the case with Savery last season, he will be nursed along the first month, and is unlikely to be stretched beyond 3 – 4 innings max until the start of conference play mid-March.

Regarding Rock Chalk Talk – I have been covering the KU team for a year on the site but no one would ever confuse me with an actual scout. Truth be told, I go to almost every home game but I still cannot read pitching or evaluate batters and fielders with any more sophistication than that of the average dedicated fan. Bkm has a much better eye for these parts of the game. His contributions will help fill in gaps and make Rock Chalk Talk’s coverage more complete. In addition to covering the KU players I know bkm plans on sharing his evaluations of visiting team’s prospects as well.

Right now there are about five inches of snow on the ground here in Lawrence. The baseball team will be leaving for Hawaii on Thursday. By 5PM Friday CST they will be playing baseball in a sunny warm park. I am so ready to put this long cold winter behind me, settle into the bleachers behind home plate, feel the sun on my face and shoulders and watch a ball game. Life just has an emptiness to it when baseball is not there for you at the end of the day.
