Doug,

In almost all likelihood, Luna is going to be playing LF for Rice this year, barring an injury (heavens forbid) to Jess Buenger, even though he’ll almost certainly be drafted as a 2B. The reason is that while he and Buenger are both top notch defensive second basemen (with Luna possibly with the ever so slight edge), Aaron is also a quality defensive OFer (as he demonstrated in the 2006 post-season), and we need both of their bats in the everyday lineup. Unfortunately, Buenger can only play 2B or 3B, and Diego Seastrunk is a lock at 3B for the Owls. Buenger could very well end this coming season on a couple All-American lists himself. Last year, with his first real taste of D-I play (as he largely sat on the A&M bench his Freshman year before transferring) and not cracking the starting lineup until mid-March(when Luna hurt his shoulder and was limited to DH duty), he still hit .305/.408/.510 with 8 HRs and some 50+ RBIs.

What many people don’t realize is that while the departures of Savery, Henley, Friday and Lehmann are certainly big losses for Rice, the Owls still return 6 players who hit above .300 in AVG and above .400 in OBP (Luna, Buenger, Gayhart, Seastrunk, Dodson and Padron), including the 3 leading HR hitters (Luna, Dodson, Buenger), 3 of the top 4 RBI men, and 3 of the top 4 AVG hitters. Expect a really breakout year from Seastrunk at 3B (he’s going to be an all-american by the time he leaves Rice, if not this coming season) and Padron.
