ACC Saturday Recap for 3/17

Virginia 7
UNC 2 11 innings

The Virginia Cavaliers used a five run 11th inning to blow open a tight 2-2 game. Greg Miclat went 3-5 on the day with 2 RBI’s to lead the offensive attack for the Cavaliers. Jacob Thompson had another strong outing on Saturday by going seven innings and only giving up one run. Robert Woodard was almost as good by lasting 6.2 innings and giving up 2 runs. The teams will be back in action tomorrow with a doubleheader which starts at noon.

Florida State 4 Wake Forest 3

The Wake Forest Demon Deacons tried to make a furious comeback but were one run short in a 4-3 loss to the Florida State Seminoles. This victory continues the win streak of the Seminoles to 22 to start the season. The Noles attack was led by Tony Thomas Jr. who went 2-3 with two runs scored from the lead-off spot. Michael Hyde pitched 5.2 scoreless innings while giving up four hits and a walk to get his seventh victory of the season. Eric Williams and Evan Ocheltree both had two hits in the losing effort for the Deacons. The teams will close out the series tomorrow at 1:00pm.

Wake Forest Recap

Clemson 7 Duke 2

The Duke Blue Devils are still searching for their first ACC victory on the season after dropping Game 2 of the Clemson series by a score of 7-2. Clemson jumped out to an early 4-0 lead after an inning and were able to hang on the rest of the game to the lead. Ryan Hinson pitched 6.1 innings while surrendering 2 runs to pick up his first victory of the season. Michael Ness picked up the loss for the Blue Devils by giving up six runs in his 3.2 innings. Brett Bartles had two hits and drove in a run to lead the offense. The teams finish their series with a first pitch on Sunday at 1:00pm.

Miami 4 Maryland 3

The Miami Hurricanes picked up a come from behind victory over the Maryland Terps 4-3 in ACC action Saturday night. The Hurricanes used a two run bottom of the ninth to turn a 3-2 deficit to a 4-3 win. They did this off of All-American closer Brett Cecil who pitched the final 1.2 innings and gave up two unearned runs as Gerry Spessard made an error in the inning. Mark Sobolewski had a bases loaded walk to drive in the winning run in the ninth. The teams will finish the series on Sunday at 1pm.

Georgia Tech 5 Boston College 2

The Boston College Eagles picked up their second straight loss to Georgia Tech on Saturday this time by a score of 5-2. Nate Jeanes started for the Eagles and had a very shaky first inning in which the Jackets scored five runs on two hits, a balk, an error, and three walks. The Jackets were held in check the rest of the game as they only got two more hits over the next seven innings. Chris House was the only Yellow Jacket with multiple hits with his 2-3 day. Peter Frates led the Eagles with a 3-4 game.

Game 1 North Carolina State 12 Virginia Tech 8

Game 2 North Carolina State 5 Virginia Tech 2

The NC State Wolf Pack picked up two victories in ACC action on Saturday over the Virginia Tech Hokies. In Game 1, Pat Ferguson was a triple short of the cycle as he drove in 2 runs and scored three with his 3-4 game. In Game 2, Jeremy Synan hit a bases loaded triple in the seventh inning to blow open a 2-2 tie to the final score.
